As Black History Month winds down, there's still plenty of Black history to acknowledge in Dallas. Some of it is even in the making!

Earlier this month, on Sunday, February 9, locals celebrated Juanita J. Craft Day. Craft was a civil rights activist from the height of the Civil Rights Movement until her death in 1985. Her house, located in Fair Park, has since been restored and is an historical landmark in Dallas. The City officially made her birthday a holiday in 2022.

Additionally, the African American Museum of Art, located inside Fair Park, has named Margie Johnson Reese as interim executive director. This announcement follows former executive director Harry Robinson Jr. stepping down in retirement after founding the museum 50 years ago. She'll fill the position until they find someone permanent.

In some sad closure news, Annie's Place, the daycare for mothers needing to make health appointments, has closed at Parkland after five years. I wrote about this place and its founder a couple of years ago and highlighted how founder Natalie Boyle opened the center for free childcare for moms with health appointments. Boyle later stepped down in 2024.

It was even gearing toward an expansion at the time. Also, they ended Mommies in Need on February 1, the in-home nanny service they offered that originally sparked Annie's Place.

Stay tuned next week for more news bites and updates.
