The City of Cedar Hill and Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the grand opening of the library in a park over the weekend.
The Traphene Hickman Library drew a crowd of city leaders, residents and curious visitors during the grand opening event on Saturday, April 27. It replaced the former Zula B. Wylie Library, which was located near Historic Downtown.
Ahead of the ribbon cutting and opening the doors to the new library, the Red Army Band played before and after remarks from Library Services Director Aranda Bell, Mayor Stephen Mason, City Manager Greg Porter, and other community leaders and members.
The library has already received recognition from Keep Texas Beautiful in the Beautify Texas Awards. It won the Outstanding Project Award for both its architecture and natural scenery (there are more than 14,000 native plants in the park).
"What you're seeing today is the result of collaborative effort of a city that's truly listening to the needs of the people," Mason said. "I already have exciting news—this project has already won the Outstanding Project of the Year Award for Keep Texas Beautiful."
In addition to the three-story library, the Cedar Hill History Museum was also open for visits in its new location inside the library.
There were plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the day, including a fun run on the trail, fitness and bird demos, live band performances, a museum tribute, food trucks, and informational/resource tables for parks, natural preserves, the fire department, and more.
Traphene Hickman Library is open Monday - Saturday and is located at 405 Pioneer Trail.
